 The Versatility of the PSP-1000

Yes your psp can be a world processor or PDA

What I Did

On to other accessories and mods for my PSP. The Theater case I have already written about. The next item going right is the Sony GPS 290 more on that in a bit. After that is the Nyko TV adaptor Great image and can be powered by the theater case. Targus carrying case and memory cards can’t have too many of those. Talkman has the little microphone you see on the PSP and can convert six languages back and forth. And finally in the second photo a wireless full keyboard (PSP1000 only) with a word processor.

How I Did It

I follow several sites including this one and will track down things of interest to me. The GPS is a great little tool that Sony has let languish in the American market. I understand there are games in Japan that use the GPS and Sega has a great astronomy program only in Japanese. Fortunately a Russian named Densika on a UK site has written a great homebrew program called Map This that works on the phat and slim. You download the maps for the area you are in and they can be sat photo, terrain, or street.

I feel sorry for Nyko they came out with some great products for the 1000 only to have Sony modify the PSP and make the products obsolete. I believe a number of companies were similarly burned and stopped developing products for the PSP. The TV adaptor clips onto the front of a phat and a CCD reads off the PSP screen and onto the Television. It has a pretty good image and is very watchable better than the feed off of the 2000 and up.

Cases are handy and when you start saving movies and music multiple memory cards are necessary. I find it helps to theme your cards I have one just for the GPS etc.

I bought Talkman for the program and the microphone there are apps for the microphone that can allow your PSP to record and the program is fun with learning game areas. This is the European version and the bird has an Australian accent, don’t know if the make a North Americian version.

Lastly, for now, a wireless keyboard for the PSP. Designed for PDA’s as well the keyboard reads off the IR sensor (not available after the 1000) and can be used to surf the web, word process on the fly and there is even a PDA app with calendar etc on it.

The upside for 1000 owners is the affordability of many of these accessories. Everything I have shown here with the exception of the PSP itself was purchased for under $200.

I know that some of the software developers have changed there focus to more friendly waters notably the iPhone and it would be a shame for this great platform to go the way of Betamax and other things Sony has kept too tight of a hold on.

By the way I am tracking down the Chinese adapter that allows you to hook up a 120 gig hard drive to your PSP. Sounds like fun.

Advice

  • Explore there is a world of great software for homebrew.
  • When you hear of something track it down I was looking for the theater case when I found the TV adaptor
  • Check selling groups Ebay etc. Scrolling through their lists brought up Talkman for me
  • Sites like this are very useful they bring up what is new and the archives can help you find information on older products
  • Have fun
