Set Up Sony PSP Media Manager

By Niko Silvester, About.com

Sony has provided a free solution to PSP download management with their PSP Media Manager software for PC. PSP Media Manager keeps your PSP download content (and any other files you want accessible to your PSP) neatly organized, and makes downloading from the PlayStation Store relatively simple. Don't look for a Mac version, though--there isn't one and (despite frequent requests) it doesn't look like there ever will be.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 10 minutes (longer if you computer or internet connection are slow)

Here's How:

  1. Start up your favorite browser on your PC (if you're on a Mac, you'll have to find a third-party program as PSP Media Manager is not available for Mac). I recommend Firefox, but any recently-updated browser should work.
  2. When prompted, select your region. This will determine which version of the PlayStation Store you connect to.
  3. Download PSP Media Manager (assuming you don't have the disc version--if you do, then simply insert the disc and follow the instructions).
  4. When the download is complete, install PSP Media Manager by double-clicking the icon on your desktop and following the on-screen instructions. See the Tips below for help if you get an error message.
  5. Once the install is complete, open Sony PSP Media Manager by double-clicking on its icon or by finding it in the Start menu.
  6. As prompted, turn on your PSP, plug it into your PC with a USB cable, and activate the USB connection by scrolling to the "Settings" menu on your PSP and selecting "USB Connection." See the Tips below for what to do if your PSP doesn't connect.
  7. When prompted, register PSP Media Manager online.
  8. Now you can access the PlayStation Store for PSP by launching Sony PSP Media Manager from your computer.

Tips:

  1. If you get a "requirements not met" error message while installing Sony PSP Media Manager, quit the install and use your PC's Uninstall Utility (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) to uninstall QuickTime. Then try installing PSP Media Manager again by double-clicking its icon.
  2. Sony PSP Media Manager requires installing a number of other programs. The installer will automatically download and install them for you--just follow the onscreen prompts.
  3. You may have to wait a moment for your PC to recognize your PSP. If clicking "OK" in the dialog box doesn't work the first time, wait a moment, then try again. You may have to wait and try a again a few times before it works, depending on how fast your computer is.

What You Need:

  • a PSP (any model)
  • a USB cable (standard connection on one end and Mini-B on the other)
  • an internet connection
  • a PC (not a Mac)
