How to Create a PlayStation Network Account

How to Create a PlayStation Network Account

There are three ways to sign up for a PlayStation Network (PSN) account: on the web, by PSP, and by PS3. You can access a single PSN account from any of these three platforms--meaning that, if you only own a PSP but later buy a PS3, you can log into the PlayStation Network with the same account you used on your PSP.

The differences: Signing up for PSN on the PS3 allows you to create a Master Account and Sub-Accounts (which are linked to the Master account), whereas signing up on the PSP does not. If you only have a PSP, the best way to sign up for PSN is through Sony's PSN Website: us.playstation.com/psn*. (You can visit this site through the PSP web browser, if you wish, but it is formatted for computer screens).

By using this website, you will have more control during the sign-up process than you would on a PSP--as in having the ability to create a Master Account and Sub-Accounts. If you have children, it is particularly useful to create a PSN Master Account for yourself, and Sub-Accounts for your children with restrictions of your choosing (for example, you can set spending limits, or enable parental lock for certain content).

To create a PSN Account, you will need to have:

  • A valid e-mail address (this will be used for sign-in)
  • A PSP, PS3, or computer with Internet access

Before you begin, you should think of a password--it's best if it's hard to guess, and different from your passwords for other online services (in case one of those services gets hacked).

On the PSN Website*:

  1. In your web browser, go to us.playstation.com/psn (for North America)
  2. Scroll down until you see see a link labeled "Join Now" (on the right-hand side of the page). Click the link.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  1. On the Home Menu, press Right on the D-Pad until the "PlayStation Network" icon is selected.
  2. Press Down on the D-Pad until you have selected "Sign Up", and press X.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

* Please note: Ever since the PSN was attacked by hackers, the sign-up service seems to be unavailable on the PSN website. Service will return eventually, so keep trying to sign up at us.playstation.com/psn periodically.
