Using the video out function and video cables on a PSP 2000 or 3000 model, you can watch your UMD movies on a tv--even a big flatscreen tv. Though it's arguable whether or not the video is truly "DVD quality" as is sometimes claimed, UMD movies look pretty good, even on a really big tv screen. Sadly, this won't work on an old PSP-1000 (or "PSP Fat") model, but if you have a 2000 or 3000 model PSP, your set to watch UMD videos on your tv.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: a minute or two to get going, then as long as the movie runs
Here's How:
- Plug your PSP in with its AC adapter, or make sure the battery has a sufficient charge for the length of the movie you'll be playing.
- Connect the AV cable to the video out port on the bottom of your PSP (it's the only port that end of the cable will fit in).
- Connect the other end of the AV cable to the appropriate ports on your tv. A component cable will have five color-coded plugs to insert and a composite cable will have three.
- Turn on your tv and select the required input. This will vary depending on your tv model, so check your tv's user manual if you aren't sure (or you can select the input by trying the available ones once your PSP is on and set up for video out).
- Turn on your PSP. Once it has started up completely, press and hold the display button on the front on the PSP (that's the button with the curved rectangle like a tv screen on it). The PSP screen should go black and the PSP's usual display will appear on your tv screen.
- Insert your UMD movie into the PSP's UMD drive (if you haven't already) and navigate to the "Video" menu using the PSP's buttons just as you would if you were going to watch the movie on your PSP screen.
- Find the movie in the "Video" menu and press the X button to start it playing. You can use all the same buttons to navigate your UMD movie as you would if you were watching it on your PSP.
- When your movie is over, press and hold the display button again, and the display will disappear from your tv and reappear on your PSP. Disconnect the cables from your tv and PSP.
Tips:
- If you plan to watch a lot of UMD movies or play UMD games on your tv, and your tv has multiple inputs, you can leave your AV cable attached to your tv and simply reconnect the PSP end when needed.
- The display button is the one with the tv-screen shaped rectangle on it that is usually used to adjust screen brightness.
- Remember that video out will not work on a PSP-1000 series model.
What You Need:
- a PSP (either a 2000 or 3000 series model)
- a PSP component or composite AV cable
- a TV with the appropriate AV-in ports (to match your PSP cables)
- an AC adapter for your PSP is a good idea, but not essential
- a UMD movie
