Inexpensive Gifts for PSP Gamers

Top Presents in the Around-$20-Or-Less Range

By , About.com Guide

Whether you need a stocking stuffer, or you've set a gift limit of $20, a list of inexpensive gifts for the PSP gamer on your list can't go too far wrong. Here are my top picks for PSP gifts that won't stress your wallet.

PlayStation Network Card

Some people don't like giving gift cards, and if you're one of them you should probably skip to the next item on the list, because PlayStation Network cards, or PSN cards for short, are basically gift cards you can use to buy digital downloads from the PlayStation Store. The recipient of your PSN card gift will need to have internet access--the PlayStation Store can be accessed directly via a PSP with a wireless connection, via a PlayStation 3 or via a PC with Sony's free Media Go software installed. If the person you're buying for can't connect to the internet, you might want to go with a gift card for a local game shop or an online store like Amazon instead. Either way, they can use the card to buy whatever game they want.

Memory Stick Pro Duo

SanDisk 4 GB Memory Stick Pro DuoSanDisk
If the person you're buying a gift for has one of the non-PSPgo models of PSP (that is the models that have a UMD drive), they'll use Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick Pro Duo for storage. A careful shopper should be able to get at least a 4GB stick for under $20--if you're lucky you might even do better. Avoid the bargain brands if possible, but you don't have to shell out for first-party. SanDisk and Lexar both make decent sticks. If the person you're shopping for has a PSPgo, you'll need to find a Memory Stick Micro M2. If you don't know which to get, and you find them for about the same price, go with the Micro as long as it comes with an adapter. In the adapter, a Memory Stick Micro M2 is compatible with the older PSP models.

PSP Screen Protector

No matter how careful you are, it's almost inevitable that any device you carry around with you is going to get scratched, and the display screen is the worst possible place for a scratch. You can do a lot towards avoiding screen scratches completely by installing a simple stick-on screen protector. Screen protectors are also not very expensive, so they make great stocking stuffers. Sony makes its own "Screen Protective Film" that is also anti-glare and comes two in a pack. I'm also really pleased with ShieldZone's invisibleShield, which comes in a screen-only version or a full front version (for PSP-1000, 2000 and 3000).

PSP Component Cable

If you're buying a gift for a PSP gamer with the oldest PSP model, the PSP-1000, skip to the next item, because only the PSP-2000 and up can use component cables. If your friend has a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000, this in one of the coolest of inexpensive PSP gifts. Component cables will let them hook up their PSP to a high-def television and play games and movies on the bigger screen. Make sure you get actual PSP component cables, as the regular kind won't even attach to the PSP. If your friend has a PSPgo, you can still get them cables, but you'll have to get the ones made specially for the PSPgo.

PSP Case

Sony PSPgo Traveler CaseSony
There is a huge selection of cases, both hard and soft, for the PSP and the PSPgo. If you browse a game shop or an online store, you should be able to find one that suits your budget and your friend's style. Sony makes a few cases for both PSP and PSPgo, if you prefer to stick with first-party accessories, but there are some great cases from other manufacturers, too. Hard-shell cases are the best for protection, but soft cases can be a good buy, too. If you really want to get something cool, try searching Etsy or ArtFire for handmade cases--but get there early and check back often, as the coolest stuff tends to sell out fast.
