Summary of 'Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time':
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time picks up the story from where Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves left off. In the last game, Bentley had invented a time machine, and now it seems someone has gone back in time to mess with the Thievius Raccoonus, the Cooper family book of thievery. Sly has to get his gang back together, find out what's happening, and stop it before his family's legacy is completely altered.
As with previous games, Sly Cooper, the gentleman thief raccoon, will be the main character, but there are other playable characters as well. Both Bentley and Murray will get their time in the spotlight, as will Carmelita Fox, the cop who's always after Sly, but who is also sometimes an ally. Some sequences will also feature Sly's ancestors as playable characters. Settings will include the present day, as well as feudal Japan and medieval England.
Gameplay will be familiar to those who have played previous games in the series, with most of the same moves and abilities, plus some new ones, being available. There will be collectable clue bottles that confer new abilities once all of them on a level have been acquired. A new feature for this instalment in the series is costumes, which will give Sly new abilities when worn, such as invincibility to projectiles, or the ability to shoot arrows with ropes attached.
The game will be mostly the same in the PS Vita and PS3 versions, and it will feature the cross-platform save function, allowing players to pick up where they left off on either the PS Vita or the PS3, with the game save automatically updating on both platforms (this will no doubt require players to buy both versions of the game separately, though). Minor differences between the two versions include the inclusion of stereoscopic 3D in the PS3 version, for those with a 3D television. The PS Vita version will also make use of some of PS-Vita-specific controls. For example, the motion sensor will be useable in some of the minigames for solving puzzles, and it will control Sly's binocucom. What other PS Vita controls will be utilized remains to be seen.
Some Background on Sly Cooper
The Sly Cooper series was originally developed by Sucker Punch Productions and released for the PlayStation 2. The series was a hit with players of all ages, due to its family-friendly, low-violence gameplay which made it a great game for kids, and its sheer fun factor, which even had adults praising it. The trilogy was re-mastered and re-released in 2012 as The Sly Collection (aka The Sly Cooper Collection and The Sly Trilogy. It included al three of the original PS2 games--Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves--in enhanced PlayStation 3 format.
The development of the remastered original trilogy was handled by Sanzaru Games, and when the original developer of the Sly series had moved on to other things, Sanzaru began work on Sly 4, the first new Sly Cooper game in six years.
