Epsilon BiOS and Modchip Update
Saturday June 24, 2006
The PSP homebrew community has been busy discussing modchips since news of the Undiluted Platinum chip first surfaced. Now, a team of hackers has posted a video of a PSP running firmware version 2.71 and able to load game ISOs from a memory card -- something only firmware 1.5 PSPs have been able to do previously (via PSP Universe). This was possible by running a custom flash replacement called Epsilon BiOS, using the Undiluted Platinum chip. Apparently, the flash replacement/modchip combo will even allow 2.71 firmware to run unsigned code, which means those of us who kept our firmware updated could potentially have full homebrew capabilities.
Of course, modchips have their downsides, too, as mentioned in articles over at PSP 3D and The Inquirer. My main concern is that these hacks will allow game piracy to run even more rampant than ever, which can only be bad for the industry we love. On the other hand, I'm excited about the legitimate homebrew possibilities.

From all the reports coming in and the fact that you can buy the modchip it looks like it certainly is real (as for the video, I haven’t seen any proof of it being fake, but I’d be interested). Epsilon BiOS has just been released, too.
