PSP Mod Chip

Sunday May 28, 2006
There have been rumours in the last day or two that someone will be coming out with a PSP mod chip that allows homebrew to run on any PSP. Now, PSP Updates has a story that seems to indicate that the rumours are true.

The chip is called Undiluted Platinum (U.P.) and incudes 32 MB of programmable flash memory -- and it'll come with PC software for programming said memory. It works as a second memory chip in the PSP, so if you add it to your system, the original PSP flash is left alone, meaning you can boot your machine from either the original or the U.P. What this really means for PSP users is two things:
  • the U.P. will let you have both the latest Sony firmware and any older or custom firmware or your PSP at the same time, so you can choose which one to use each time you boot (and you can switch the firmware on the U.P. to a different one any time you like)
  • you can add the U.P. to a bricked PSP (that is, one in which the original PSP flash is damaged so that it no longer starts up) to make it useable again
In other words, the Undiluted Platinum chip is a dream come true for PSP owners who want the benefits of updated firmware and the flexibility of a machine that can run homebrew. It's very exciting, and I hope it lives up to the promises, because I want one! (Via PSP Updates.)

It appears that the rumours are true. Some website have already started taking pre orders for the U.P. here.

I wonder what the final retail price will be — although the site you linked has a price, it also says the final price is not yet determined. I also wonder how this will affect game piracy.
