Greatest Hits for PSP (E3 2006)

Wednesday May 10, 2006
If you play PlayStation 2 games (are there any PSP gamers out there who don't?) you'll know that many of the best PS2 titles are re-released as "Greatest Hits" with the red "Greatest Hits" title on the packaging and a new lower price. This has always been a great way for patient gamers to have the chance to play the top games for PS2 at a lower cost than if they bought the game when it was first released.

Now, Sony has announced that there will be a Greatest Hits line for PSP, as well. There will be five first-party (that is, published by Sony) Greatest Hits titles when the line first launches, followed by fifteen third-party titles.

The first five PSP Greatest Hits will be:
  • Ape Escape: On the Loose
  • ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails
  • Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
  • Twisted Metal: Head On
  • Wipeout Pure
The MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price -- not necessarily what stores will price them at) is $19.99 USD per title, which is considerably less than the original retail of pretty much any PSP game you can name.

It will be interesting to see which titles get the Greatest Hits treatment in the future. I'm betting Daxter will -- all of the PS2 Jak & Daxter titles are Greatest Hits, and it would be a shame if the PSP game broke the trend. Plus, it's a great game.

Nice! I heard about this, but I wonder when this will kick in. Gamestop has images of the new titles, but the prices are still around $40. It must be soon.
